Hiring the right individual first time round is critical to support your business scale. This can never be fool proof and is open to human error (from hiring managers and also employees), so here at Boost we have created a list of tips to help you:

Spot the gap: Have a real think about what you need this person’s capabilities to be to fill the long term gap, skills & professional qualifications.

Write the JD: Create a detailed description of the role, accurately reflect your expectations and demands of the position. Run this through Gender Decoder to help find subtle bias in the advert.

Check your hiring process: It needs to be streamlined in a competitive market but we need it to be efficient to ensure effective hiring. A well organised, and enjoyable interview process will help attract and hire the right talent for your team. Utilise a mix of behavioural, situational & technical questions. Consider technical assessments for highly skilled vacancies.

Culture Add: Years ago we used to discuss culture fit, but due to value sets being mistaken for characteristics & hobbies this term became outdated. Now we discuss culture add, think of evolving culture instead of stagnating, we don’t want to encourage “groupthink”, we need a difference in ideas but unity in values, the real benefit in culture add is the diversity this brings and the inclusion it will result in.

Reference: Although lots of companies only offer a standard HR type reference, its still worth an ask for a few more personal references. It’s great to utilise these to discuss character, work ethic & professional habits.

Hiring can be daunting, but should be fun! By implementing some of the above you are more likely to hire the right individual first time round, resulting in a stronger, more productive team!
